Work and Rest
Art by Jean Charlot
This artist, Jean Charlot, was born in Paris to French and Mexican Indian parents. In the 1920’s he moved to Mexico to join artists like Diego Rivera in the creative awakening. He even contributed to Rivera’s famous mural, Creation. This piece is one of a series that depict a mother rolling tortillas with a child on her back.
Women are often expected to balance both labor and care-taking, while providing space for rest for the people in their lives. Taking care of others is a beautiful act that should be celebrated, but it’s important not to let it overrun care for ourselves. We must find time to rest.
