My Mother Named Me Beloved

Art by Kalila Ain

This piece was featured in the “Rest Is Power” exhibit at New York University. The artist, Kalila Ain, inspires us in our practice of healing and rest. As Tricia Hersey writes in her book, “Rest is Resistance” (pg. 26):

“When we honor our bodies via rest, we are connecting to the deeper parts of ourselves.”

Resting is how we begin to heal. It feels impossible sometimes, to find a moment in a the chaos, but it’s not optional. Rest is required to move with care. We must find small (or big!) moments throughout the day to find rest. This painting shows a moment found in rest between a mother and daughter. They rest together in a practice that shows us love and care.

Kalila Ain shares insights into her work and focus on healing in her bio linked below:

“My creative practice is informed by an overwhelming desire to see healing in our world.”
